My most prized possession

IMG_4508

Yes, truthfully this gorgeous looking blanket would be the most prized possession that I own. It was made for me when I was an infant by a sweet auntie and quickly became the item I could not live without...my blankie. No fancy name, no super soft fabric...just a now faded, tattered, and well loved blankie.

The joke used to be:
"You'll sleep with that thing until highschool"....yep.
"You'll take that thing with you to college"...yep.
"Are you going to get married and still sleep with that blankie?"...yep.

While I have certainly graduated from the days of dragging blankie around the house with me everywhere I go, I still prefer to sleep with it. Yes, I confess, I can sleep without it now, but I much prefer to have it. It certainly ensures a better nights sleep and provides just the right amount of extra neck support with my pillow.

So the question is...now that baby J is coming in T minus 2 1/2 months (ahhh!) is it FINALLY the time I have to give up sleeping with blankie? Does becoming a parent mean I should probably not have a security blanket? Will it be weird one day when she's like "Mom, what is this tattered blanket hidden behind your pillow??"

Here's what I think...I love that blanket, and really, she's not going to be talking for a while so I should be fine for at least say, another couple of years, right?

Don't answer that. My decision has been made. The blanket stays. At least for now.

The question is, what kind of blankie should we get for baby J? We have to find one that she is going to love just as much as her Mama loves hers.

Confession: I can't sleep without, err much prefer to sleep with my "comfort pillow"! :)

Wow, I can't believe baby J will make her debut in only 2 1/2 months!! Can't wait!

I like your answer - I think the blankie should stay put. I love that you still have a blankie - I look at it as my most "longest owned possession" since I was carried home from the hospital 30 years ago with mine.
I've also wondered the same thing about giving up my blankie -affectionately named Idaho...and I just don't think I will...maybe I'll pass it along to my baby. But with how shredded it is, I would imagine it could probably be classified as a choking hazard...I may have to rethink this.

Aw Courtney, my sediments exactly!! You know I have the same love affair with my blanky, and I just can't ever see a day when it will end. If we all keep our blankies through high school/college/marriage/parenthood - doesn't that make it okay? :)

Pretty sure you already know how I will respond to this. Considering you, me, Kris, Coffey, Jamie, etc are all STILL pondering your same question :) Strength in numbers...mine's staying for awhile longer as well. Oh Dee Dee...

Confession... the only time I've ever thought about giving Boo Boo away was if I should give it to Baby J. But I don't know if she'll love it as much as I do. I don't think this is a 'one woman's trash is another treasure' kind of situation. Every baby needs her own!

I'll never forget the relief I felt in college when I realized that you and Jamie still had your blankies too!! I say keep it as long as it stays intact! :) Can't wait to meet baby!!

I still sleep with mine. Although sadly, just last week I had to take out all of the balled-up and tangled stuffing and throw it away (just the insides, not the blankie). Now it's just an incredibly thin, see-thru threadbare shell. I don't think I can ever part with it though :)
